Elijah was born to a viking and a witch as the third Mikaelson sibling. His older sister Freya was given away to their evil aunt as part of a deal. Esther was rendered infertile and begged her sister to use magic to make her able to bear children. As payment, Dahlia demanded the first born child of every Mikaelson generation. Elijah grew up with his siblings, protecting them and cherishing them dearly. He was trained by their viking father, Mikael, in the ways of combat and often helped raise Niklaus, his half brother with whom their father despised. Mikael would regularly beat Niklaus for any small infraction or sign of weakness. Elijah would come to protect Niklaus from their father who had never recovered from the 'loss' of Freya. They were told she grew ill and died, only Esther and Dahlia knew the truth.
When the youngest brother, Henrik, was killed, Esther couldn't stand to lose another child and used the blood of the Doppelganger, Tatia, to cast an immortality spell upon her family. Coincidentally, Tatia was Elijah's first love. This spell turned them into the first vampires. Except Niklaus, who was the child of Esther and a werewolf. He became a hybrid. Esther used a spell to suppress his werewolf gene. Before Elijah could learn to control his bloodlust, he accidentally slaughtered a few villagers and was caught by Tatia who fled. He lost control again and accidentally killed her. Devastated and utterly broken by the realisation when he was himself again, his mother magically altered his memories and locked all things vile behind a Red Door in his mind. She told him that Tatia's life was taken during the spell so he would hate her for it and not himself.
They ended up having a falling-out with their parents and went on the run after Mikael found out of Esther's affair, finding his hatred towards Niklaus justified. Mikael chased them down everywhere they went, intent on killing Niklaus. So they travelled around the world, taking on different identities to stay hidden from Mikael.
Elijah met another Doppelganger centuries later, identical to his first love, Tatia, by the name of Katerina Petrova. Niklaus intended to use her to break the spell holding back his werewolf side but Elijah fell in love with her just as he had Tatia and found a way to spare her life. He went behind his brother's back to carry on with his plan to save her and break the curse at the same time, but Katerina was too afraid and took her own life. She ingested vampire blood before hanging herself and became a vampire. No longer human, she was no use to Niklaus. This devastated Elijah.
Later, in the 1700's, Elijah met and fell in love with a beautiful witch named Celeste. Niklaus just can't stand to see his brother devoted to someone besides him, so he cleverly blamed a massacre on the witches. The townspeople did the work for him and killed her, again, breaking Elijah's heart. This was around the time they founded New Orleans and made the city their home.
Their sister, Rebekah, later used a witch to contact Mikael and tell him just where they were as revenge for Niklaus denying her the choice to love Marcel Gerard. Mikael came to New Orleans, tried to kill them, and burned the city to the ground. They fled again.
In Mystic Falls, Elijah spent time with Katerina while he investigated the new Doppelganger, Elena Gilbert. Still human, she would work for Niklaus' spell to break the curse. He planned to keep her safe and break the curse, like he had attempted to do with Katerina. They ultimately succeeded in breaking the curse, making Niklaus the first Hybrid. He was betrayed by Katerina again and left with his brother for New Orleans again. Once there, they found out Niklaus had a miracle baby with a werewolf one-night-stand. Being a vampire, you're rendered sterile, but seeing as he was half werewolf, that side of him could breed, passing on his hybrid genes to his daughter-to-be, Hope.
Elijah saw this unborn daughter as a way to redeem Niklaus and hopefully make him a less nasty person. In the process, he fell in love with Hayley, the baby's mother. This caused tension between the brothers, but he refused to act on their mutual feelings for a very long time. Hayley died in child birth, but with the baby's hybrid vampire blood in her system when she died, she came back as a hybrid, like Niklaus.
Hope had to go into hiding with Rebekah because of the Mikaelson family enemies. They faked her death when their mother, back from the dead, tried to have her killed, knowing but not telling anyone that if the child lived, Dahlia would come for her and she didn't want Dahlia to come back.
Elijah betrayed a lot of friends and some family to keep the rest of his family safe and eventually made a move on Hayley, becoming a sort of relationship until Hayley had to be married off to Jackson to save the werewolves of her clan. Lots of Mikaelson family drama ensues with dead parents and siblings coming back to life to torture them. Eventually Dahlia comes for Hope and this frees Freya from her prison, who at first, wants to kill Hope, but decides to help her brothers and sister kill Dahlia, the which to enslaved her.
Eventually, a creature called the Hollow started resurrecting itself and Elijah was captured for the ritual to bring her back. He was stabbed with a rose branch that had been grown from Marcel's super Hybrid blood and killed to bring the Hollow back in full. Freya manages to capture his soul and place it in a pendant just as he dies.
